Autumn Flavors

Cèpes are one of the wild mushrooms that most French chefs use all year round. The weather conditions in the Dordogne region makes it an excellent place for the growing of cêpes. The Dordogne autumn temperature of 20-25 degrees seasoned with some overnight rain-showers, make it an excellent place for the growing of France’s most tasty cèpes mushrooms (UK: Penny Buns; NL/BE: Eek-hoorntjesbrood).

Last year, our neighbour, who is our gardener and landscaper, took us on a discovery walk in our 16,000 m2 fenced garden. We found three mushroom areas containing these well sought for cèpes. However, we learned the importance of caution and expert knowledge.

If you like to source your own edible mushrooms, use a specialised mobile app, seek an expert’s guidance or ask the local pharmacists, who is trained to identify mushrooms. Alternatively, explore Dordogne’s markets for freshly vetted cèpes. Or, enter any restaurant, as the cèpes have acquired a permanent place on the menu of almost every restaurant in The Dordogne. Go on a culinary journey and savor the delights of this autumnal delicacy.

À bord de bateaux traditionnels

During summer we love to canoe the Dordogne river. During fall you might want to step aboard a traditional Gabarre boat and embark on a journey along the Dordogne River. Experience the rich history of these flat-bottomed boats that connected Bergerac to neighboring towns, shaping the region’s economy.

Two companies, Gabarres de Bergerac and Les Gabarres Caminade, offer rides along the meandering river, unveiling the region’s natural beauty and cultural treasures. Gabarres de Bergerac, located in Bergerac, combines well with a visit to Quai Cyrano’s Maison des Vins. Indulge in the cozy ambiance of this wine bar while enjoying breathtaking views of the Dordogne River from its terrace.

An alternative is Les Gabarres Caminades. Embarking at La Roque-Gageac, you will go along a different part of the Dordogne river and hear fascinating stories about local history, customs, and the river’s eco-system. The 50-minute car drive from Masion Saint-Blaise to La Roque-Gageac winds through picturesque villages, which on itself is already worth your time.

The boat tours operate until the end of October. The colorful landscape adds an extra touch of magic to your journey.

Note: Check in advance whether guidance during the boat tours is available in English or French.

Culinary Delights

Whether you’re exploring Michelin-starred restaurants or savoring the delights of local markets, the culinary scene in Dordogne promises a gastronomic exploration like no other. The region is known for its commitment to using locally sourced quality ingredients, ensuring an authentic dining experience.

Witness fine dining at Restaurant L’Atelier in Issigeac. It offers contemporary cuisine, which favors local and seasonal produce and homemade bread. During fall to be savoured inside with large fireplaces. Ideal for an evening dining and wining with a group of friends or just with the two of you.

One of the unique characteristics of Issigeac is its round streets. These winding streets curve and intersect, resembling the shape of a snail’s shell. This layout adds to the village’s charm and creates an enchanting atmosphere for exploration.

Nestled in the bastide of Villeréal, Lot, Restaurant Nord Sud welcomes you to indulge in a delightful dining experience.

Pascal and Fanny Vermughen, the talented duo behind this culinary haven prepare a menu that showcases locally sourced ingredients and dishes crafted entirely on-site.

And… in France but craving a pizza? Bring the kids, as one of the delights at Restaurant Nord Sud is their wood-fired pizzas. Do ask for the table across, so you are able to view the pizza oven.

While we’ve highlighted just two of the remarkable restaurants in the vicinity, there is an abundant array of dining options waiting to be explored. We provide more tips via our guest guide.
