Sarlat-la-Canéda is the fourth largest town in the Dordogne region, located in Perigord Noir, the eastern part of the Dordogne. Sarlat is famous for its cuisine, historic architecture, and cobbled streets. It attracts over 1.5 million visitors each year, of which most visit during the summer period.
This beautiful medieval town is build on several levels. The historic center has been protected from modern development, making it almost car-free. It has the highest amount of historical buildings per square foot in the whole of France.
Only located 1 hour from our holiday home, this city lends itself perfectly for a day trip. Even more outside the busy summer season: you will have the opportunity to meander through the cobble-stone streets in your own pace.
Just like in the movies

Beautiful Sarlat is developed around the Saint Sacerdos cathedral, which was probably build in the 800’s. Sarlat is one of the towns most representative of 14th century France which has attracts numerous filmmakers.
One of the more recent movies, 2021, was Ridley Scott’s movie ‘The Last Duel’. A movie about a knight who defends his wife’s honor. It features Hollywood stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer.
The movie is based on the book The Last Duel by Eric Jager, the film is set in 14th-century France. The true story is based on extensive research of Eric Jager. For more see a long read at Smithsonian Magazine for more on the story and movie.
Film is important to Sarlat and every year in November The Sarlat Film Festival is being held at Cinéma Rex in the centre of the town. It is one of the major festivals of the French cinematographic world, according to Nouvelle-Aquitaine Tourisme. You will likely spot some famous French actors or directors during these days. And get the opportunity to sneak preview some of the best film productions at that moment.
A bit of history
Sarlat’s origins believed to trace back to the 9th century, although its first official mention appeared in the 11th century. During 14th and 15th centuries it became a trading center for walnuts and truffles.
Sarlat thrived economically, thanks to its strategic location. This is why many of the ancient houses in Salrat stem from the 14th century. Since 1962 Sarlats historic buildings are protected by law from demolition.

Sarlat’s many markets

Sarlat is hosts to many markets, where locals also do their shopping.
You will for sure notice the Sainte-Marie Church at place de la Liberté, Sarlat’s lively main square. Or actually, you can’t miss its huge doors weighing over 2 tons. Behind the large door you’ll find an indoor market and a cultural space.
Truffle markets take place from December to February. The Truffle Festival is being held in mid-January, sales stands, exhibitions, cooking demonstrations, and workshops.
And there is a large Christmas Village during the month of December. The Parking Rigaudie is turned into a Christmas wonderland, full of lights and market stalls.
But even if you just go without visiting a market, you will have a great time just sightseeing or taking pictures of all the historic buildings.
Sarlat is a thriving tourist destination because of its historic center, pedestrian-friendly streets and inviting and enjoyable atmosphere. There are plenty of artisan shops and cafes for you to enjoy.
